perla let out a huff of discontentment. it was true, it really was getting darker. she hated the dark more than she hated anything else. more than the stories of ghosts and goblins that cruel people always told her and more than the rumors that surrounded the island. it could be that deep inside, she felt that all of those monsters of myth came alive within the blackness of night. and that's why it scared her so. it was irrational, but she couldn't shake it. the girl had even tried to overcome this phobia countless times before; yet, obviously, she had gotten no relief. the redhead frowned, noticing the blue hue that the world in front of her was suddenly cloaked in. if she could get out of here before the sun fell, she would be fine. but the two people at her sides seemed as if they were quite ready to be leaving themselves.
"s-scary things?" perla stammered, eyes wide. she was such a fool. she was nearly an adult and yet she let herself be frightened by an arbitrary fact of life; that fact being that the sun, did, indeed set. "you're both leaving? umm.." she wanted to ask to tag along with one of them, but felt as if she might be troubling them further. miyako left as quickly and as suddenly as she had appeared. the girl waved her hand in farewell, but she had already disappeared.
"i'm not familiar with this forest. kazu, could i possibly.." she had began to ask if she could follow him, a bright flash of light drew her attention. it was bright and an unnatural shade of lavender. she furrowed her brow and almost felt like crying. were these the fabled 'scary things' of which the strange boy next to her spoke?

Just as Kazu thought he'd finally be able to go home and relax, a bright light flashed across the clearing. Startled, he almost dropped his school bag, but he managed to cling to it by the finger tips as he blinked his eyes in confusion. He cast a questioning look towards Perla, wondering if she had any idea what just had happened, but it seemed she was even the most scared. A purple flame seemed to have burst into the clearing, floating along like some sort of butterfly, as Kazu stared on with a shocked look. He was only joking before, but it seemed he might've been right.
He clutched his bag as he got closer to Perla, mostly in fear of being singled out by whatever was out there. At times like this, he really wished Yuki would take over and figure things out, but he knew he couldn't get by in life by doing that every time. Plus, it seemed the alter ego had fallen asleep, probably from boredom. Well, he guessed if he should do anything, it would be to leave the forest. However, he couldn't just leave the red haired girl behind; she seemed pretty lost even if there wasn't some sort of monster out there.
"Um.. What's to say we leave this place?" Kazu asked, grabbing Perla's hand without particularly thinking. If they could just follow the path again, they would be able to leave the overgrown area and escape back into town. Perfect! However, as he began to lead her towards the dirt road, he suddenly remembered the straight-laced woman. She couldn't be far, could she? If anything, she probably saw the light as well or even where it came from. For quite a few moments, he contemplated just leaving, but with a sigh, he dropped the girl's hand and trotted back towards the undergrowth. "Ms. Kizuna? Are you still around?" While he didn't particularly want to meet whatever caused the strange flame and light, he felt like leaving the woman here would guilt him for ages. Sometimes it really sucked being a nice guy.

Miyako stood frozen, her muscles stiff with fear. She knew she should run. She knew, her intelligent mind knew that that would be the best course of action. But her instincts were stronger in her animal form, overriding the reasoning of her mind at times, and right now they were telling her to wait and hopefully let the threat pass. Her mind thought it ridiculous to consider humans a threat, but her instincts thought different, and her instincts had already taken over her body, locking her in place. All she could do was wait, as her instincts had also denied her access to her powers; she couldn't transform back in a last ditch attempt to save her human facade.
Her silver eyes tracked the movement in the brush as one of the humans made their way to her just as she'd hoped they wouldn't. She continued to watch as Kazu emerged, coming face to face with her—or would that be face to snout? Miyako remained still, as if that would change the fact that she'd finally been discovered. It didn't.
And there was no way she could possibly lead him to believe that she was a normal fox; she stood at least a foot taller than an average fox, and the twin tails twitching nervously behind her were a dead giveaway. She was able to speak in this form, but decided not to—that would only freak him out more. So she simply tried her best to convince him that she was (somewhat) friendly, that she wouldn't eat him or anything of the sort. She took a step towards him, moving gingerly slow, and looked up at Kazu with what she hoped were friendly eyes. She huffed softly, a kitsune signal for friendship. Who knew what Kazu would think of her like this, though? Or Perla, for that matter, if she happened to follow Kazu?

the redhead was captivated by the strange purple light that flicked up from the dark forest around them. it was the kind of sudden illumination that could easily be attributed to lightning, the way it flashed so brightly and briefly. in fact, she wouldn't have given it a second thought if it hadn't been for the strange, purple color of it. and the flame that shot out along caused it. perla clenched her teeth nervously and stared in awe. it was so.. unnatural. she could feel fear creeping over her, taking control of her her limbs and halting all movement. she was a terrible, terrible coward; yet, this was the first time that she was experiencing a situation like this, that was presumably anything but common. tricks had been pulled on her countless times. she'd been stuck in all of the everyday predicaments that never failed to strike fear; the sensation of being watched or followed, unexplained sounds. but this was something completely different. it was occurring right in front of her and she had absolutely no idea of what to do.
"y-yeah," she muttered in response to kazu. she was in a sort of bewildered trance as she followed; or rather, was led by the hand, towards the path out of the forest. that's right, miyako should be somewhere around here, she recalled. hopefully she's alright. the young girl felt that she was slowly regaining her senses and stared around herself curiously, fearing that the moment she turned a creature would emerge and drag her by the ankles into the darkness of the woods. she treaded lightly upon the ground, struggling to make as little noise as possible.
perla was still gazing behind her when they suddenly stopped. she flicked her head and froze. she was immediately met with a surreal sight. an animal. a fox. but it wasn't a normal fox. it was huge and had two tails. her breath caught in her throat and she gave a worried glance to kazu. she was ready to turn and bolt at any second. the creature didn't budge for a few minutes while her eyes darted this way and that, trying to avoid looking it in the eyes. it was as if she met its ethereal glance, she would turn to stone. she let out a whimper as it slowly approached.

The soft crunch of leaves alerted Kazu to another presence. At first he thought it was just Perla following along him, but it took a few seconds to make him realize that she was standing alongside him, staring at something just to the side. Flicking his blue eyes, the boy realized that something a bit... white, silvery, and furry was creeping up to them. He whipped around, not sure what to take of the sight he now saw fully. A large, strangely colored fox stood nearby, the calming gray eyes it held staring directly at the two. While Kazu was sure he should probably take Perla and run, there was something a little... off about the fox that made him think again.
The dog-like creature didn't seem particularly dangerous. It even looked like it was trying to be gentle and friendly. Kazu, who had always been a bit of a fan for canines, sort of wanted to go forward and touch the creature on the nose. On the other hand, if it was just tricking him to get an extra snack, he would be a fairly easy target for such a large beast. A long silence followed as he stared at the strange animal, the urge rising once more. His hand stretched out, trembling slightly, and his school bag slipped off his arm into the dirt once more. The summer books made a dull thud on the ground, as the strap flowed to a stop on top of the heavy sack. The fear of approaching such a curious thing affected Kazu, the scared feeling piling his heart, but also something of excitement. He got exhilaration by this sort of thing, by the mysteries of the town. While this could be equally as an overgrown fox, there was a chance it could be one of the many legends surrounding Jukyo. While he normally didn't get kicks from fantasy, the very thought of it revived the old childish daydreams.
His fingers lightly touched the sleek canine, lightly at first, but slowly tussling through the fur. It feels soft. he thought as he stroked the beast's neck. It certainly didn't feel dangerous, Kazu assumed, as he glanced back at Perla who was still behind him. Fear was in her eyes, and he could blatantly understand why. This thing was a freak of nature, the size of it far larger than any common red fox. It was even larger than most of the stray dogs in town that he fed when Yuki was sleeping. His blue orbs glanced back towards the silvery thing. No matter what it was, it didn't seem like a monster. It seemed gentle, clever, and relatively pretty.
"I think it's okay." he finally huffed out, slipping his hand towards the fox's forehead and stroking it like any pet dog he had seen. While he never owned one, he had always liked them. His parents never thought he could take care of one, so they always threw out the ones he tried to bring home.

The kitsune hadn't been sure what to expect from the humans Kazu and Perla. Whether they would run, try to confront her, or just stand there in place, Miyako hadn't the slightest clue as to how they would react. She stood in front of the humans, unmoving as she watched for their reaction. Both finally showed her the reactions she was waiting for moments after noticing her presence. Perla's was understandably fearful, but Kazu's was quite unexpected.
Miyako would never have guessed that Kazu would actually reach out and stroke her creamy off-white fur in such a friendly fashion. It caught her off guard, and the feel of Kazu's fingers in her fur was very pleasant. Slowly, the kitsune lowered herself onto her haunches, settling into a relaxed sitting position. Twin tails pounded the ground happily in succession, playing the beat of contentment: Thump-thump, thump-thump. A sound almost like a purr rumbled deep in her throat, another noise of happiness.
Large silver eyes flickered to Perla still hiding behind Kazu. The kitsune tried to convey a message to frightened human, attempting to say with her eyes rather than her voice, "Don't be afraid." Why was communicating without words so hard sometimes? Miyako wanted more than anything to speak to Perla and tell her that she wasn't to be harmed in the kitsune's presence—but that would only scare the human more.
Her attention went back to Kazu as his hand moved to her forehead. Another purr-like sound vibrated in her throat and her silver eyes fell half-closed. Not even the kitsune herself had known that she liked petting and attention so much. She leaned her head into Kazu's hand, silently asking for more. A soft bark let itself out as she opened her eyes and looked at the two humans, a canine grin pulling at the edges of her muzzle.

the twin-tailed fox now seemed to be completely calm. but, perla was not. her nerves were frayed and nothing seemed to smooth them down. her racing thoughts told her that even if it seemed kind at this very moment, it could very well snap the next. she was well aware of the unwelcome tears that were pooling in her bright blue eyes. she pictured flashing white teeth tearing apart bloodied flesh; ravaging it and then tossing it away like trash. the girl couldn't handle it. this thing that she didn't understand and that couldn't possibly be explained to her.
her eyes darted from kazu, who was calmly patting the animal, to the animal itself. her breath was shallow and tears threatened to fall at any second. she bit her lip and whipped her body around. she took the first step quick step away. then, she couldn't stop herself. her pace quickened and quickened until she was sprinting as fast as her legs could take her. her long, red hair trailed behind her. the early evening air was cool against her skin. her face would be flushed by the time she reached her destination; wherever it was. the young perla's heart beat erratically. she stared up at the branches of the trees overhead. everything looked the same. she had no idea where she was, but that didn't stop her, as it should have. there were a few times when she slowed. but just as she did, some make believe monster stepped a twig, making a cracking sound that pushed her on. without thinking, she took a sharp turn into the forest.
her tears were flowing freely now. in her short time on the earth, she'd never been so terrified. as she began to slow, she looked around herself. it really was quite dark. she could make out a few structures in the distance, but they didn't seem quite normal. glancing at the fallen stones around her, she apprehensively continued on; realizing now that it would have been better to just stay put.
