perla kinsella was new to jukyo. due to some unfortunate happenings in her hometown, she was forced to move. its not like she specifically chose such a city. she had rolled out a huge map on her dining room table and closed her eyes. she twirled her index finger around and stabbed it down to wherever her faux pointer happened to be over when she reached the count of ten. it was completely random and she had decided that no matter where her finger landed on, she'd go there. it was that kind of situation. she had hated where she was and she felt the need to break away. and so, she lived the life of an underage escapee. though she wouldn't openly admit it, the girl had always liked the idea of becoming a drifter.
perla walked sluggishly on the side of the dirt road that was supposed to lead to some scenic cliff area. she didn't feel any emotion in particular. perhaps listlessness was the best way to describe it. she had started this excursion off feeling bright and ready for adventure, but that outlook had somewhat faded. despite this, she dark-haired girl was still in a rather good mood. she snapped up blue chicory flowers and queen anne's lace that grew haphazardly along the dirt road. she glanced at the bunch of wildflowers in her hand, wondering what she'd even do with them. how long could this road possibly go on? she wondered, biting her lip. the road itself was rather gloomy and poorly managed, but it had a rather homely feeling. she noticed that there was a break in the brush close by. it let white light flood into the darkness that the overhead canopy of tree branches created. a sign stood next to it. in faded blue paint, it read hungry cliffs. she mosied on through the clearing which led to a grassy knoll and, presumably, the cliffs that she had set out for to begin with.
perla took in a deep breath. the air smelled of salt. she shuffled towards the edge of the cliff. there was a wooden fence that stopped anyone from going too close. another sign warned of the consequences for passing over the fence. injury, death. the girl frowned and climbed over it anyway, nearly snagging the end of her dark blue dress. she reached the other side and sat cross-legged in the grass for a moment, about five inches from the edge of the cliff. she stared at the sea below. waves crashed at the island's steep edges. she grabbed her makeshift bouquet and sent it flying into the rapacious sea. they were tossed into the wind, but still reached the water in just a few seconds. she wondered if she were to fall, would she look the same way? she scoffed out loud and laid down in the grass next to the land's limit and the crashing waves of salty water.

a man who looked to be in his late teens was sitting in the bushes lazily, bow held at point but relaxed due to the lack of action that was occurring. just like his sister, cho, he was avid in bowman-ship. of course, not nearly as talented as cho, but as a member of the ebisawa family he had a record to maintain. but there were no monsters around here at all. he had heard terrifying stories about these cliffs--the very reason he asked to be stationed there. but for all the wild stories it told, there was an awful lack in exhilaration here. it was just like any other cliff. he was even allowed to go over the fence that kept civilians from approaching so he could get a closer look, but even when he did, there was nothing interesting to see. sure, it was kind of eerie looking now and again, but nothing too strange.
his slight doze was ripped from him when he heard the snapping of twigs. someone walking? he went on high alert, keeping his bow drawn as he peered through the bushes. he watched with interest as a girl with long, deep aurburn hair climbed over the fence and sat down innocently, throwing a bouquet of flowers over the edge of the cliff as some sort of offering. he relaxed himself. just a girl... then his senses came to him. a girl? she's not supposed to be here! he put his drawn arrow back into his quiver and strapped his bow over his shoulder and emerged from the bushes, wiping away leaves that had caught on his shirt. she could have easily been a demon. but he knew how those monsters were. seeing the bow on his shoulder wouldn't allow her to reveal herself so easily, if she was. but then again, he didn't know, she could be a regular girl.
he stepped over the small fence, to which he realized the fence was certainly much to small to properly keep anything out. he shrugged and approached the girl, maintaining a foot or so distance between them. he said with a genuine voice, "miss, you know you're not supposed to be over here, right?" his tone was kind of abrupt, but at the same time inviting. he sat down next to her, as though he were defying his own words as well. he was always like that. always breaking the rules and going against himself. his hair was ruffled from the wind, the smell of salt keen in his nose. oh, how he relished that scent.

the auburn-haired girl yawned. in such a place, she was growing drowsy. maybe it was the steady crash of waves. or maybe it was the breeze lulling her to sleep. she didn't know or care. she lifted her arms and let them fall over her face to shield her eyes from the sun that shone so dazzlingly. perla was glad that she had come to a city that was around places like this. she liked water, trees, hills.. practically anything in nature. as a child, she would go to area parks and stay there for hours. she would climb trees and sit there, listening to chirping birds and leaves rustling. she hoped there would be other places for her to explore. it was a small island but she'd heard it had quite beautiful. she'd also heard some less flattering things about demons and curses. the girl wasn't so keen on that.
she was a huge scaredy cat. tales of ghosts and monsters frightened her to no end. its not as if she was cajoled into this nature by an obnoxious relative, she was born lily-livered. even now, at the age of seventeen, she was afraid the dark. at night, she imagined that whenever she closed her eyes, things would come out and dance in front of her closed eyelids. maybe even stare at her with predatory eyes from the corners of her room. she wasn't so childish that she had to use a night light, though. she would usually keep her shade partly open and things would be fine. it was embarrassing to have such a fear. however, the girl couldn't seem to shake it.
perla sensed a presence approaching her and heard light footsteps on the grass next to her. when she heard a voice, her blue eyes flicked upon and she let out a dismayed gasp. she sat up and immediately found the source of the voice. a blonde guy seemed to have manifested in front of her. "oh, i know. i saw the sign over there," she answered. was she about to get scolded? she glowered at the thought. he sounded rather kind, but she wasn't sure. "but aren't you behind it as well? who are you?" if he was in charge of enforcing the rules or something, she didn't want to have been rude to him. she smiled, appearing to be mild-mannered.

as he began to ascertain, it looked like the girl could scare easily. that piqued his interest substantially, for he loved everything that had to do with horror or scary things, and he figured scaring her would probably be a blast! or was that the wrong way to go about it? kuro had always been bad at judging how to act in certain situations. he found it always got him into inexplicable trouble.he fiddled with a flower that was to his right as she spoke of seeing the sign--yeah, it wasn't a very convincing sign. he realized that. he had always loved everything that had to do with nature--that slightly burning feeling he got when the sun was shining on his face, the feeling of walking barefoot through grass, the smell of rain--everything about it. as he fiddled with the small weed-like flower he wondered if nature loved itself as well.
he sighed, tossing the flower to his side, reckoning that she had a point. kuro wondered why she didn't point out the bow on his back. normal civilians would have been scared stiff. hunters were usually scary types who didn't talk to civilians much other than to conduct recon. especially that hayatoya fellow. he was as stiff as they came. kuro tried not to talk to him much, seeing as how he had gone a bit mental since his fiance passed. he knew how that could hurt. well, not knowing firsthand what it felt like, but he saw what it did to people. honestly, kuro didn't think he was as bad as others. others had gone much more crazy. so, with a yawn and a stretch, he answered her question with a light and airy laugh. "it's not very convincing, is it? the sign..." he began, and ruffled his hair absentmindedly.
he then pointed to the bow that was strung around his shoulder, as though pointing to it would identify who he was immediately. "i'm kuro. kuro ebisawa, a famous family of hunters. nice to meet you!" he stuck out his hand jubiously, a nice sincere smile to accompany it. he continued on speaking. "since i'm a hunter, i'm technically allowed to be over here, but haven't you heard the story, miss...?" he trailed on as though for an invitation for her to speak her name.

the redheaded girl took in a deep breath, returning her gaze back to the sea. no dark blotch of land could be seen in the distance. could the island really be so desolate? she only now realized how alone this island really was. it was a miniscule piece of land in a vast blue sea. even most of the grounds seemed to be uninhabitated. it was much, much different from where she was raised. home had been sky scrapers and smokestacks as far as the eye could see. the sky was a constant shade of murky grey. people walked through the streets with a total disregard of the things and people that surrounded them - as if they had their eyes taped shut. but, she supposed, she had been like them not so long ago. she never opened her eyes because there was never anything worth seeing. now, though, she could see blue skies and, of all things, the ocean! it was so grand. perla looked up and a smile spread across her face.
she listened to the person who called himself 'kuro ebisawa' intently. hunter? what was that again? she thought, staring at the bow he had slung over his shoulder that she had somehow not noticed earlier. it seemed like a rather odd title, but she had definitely heard it before. something to do with the monsters that were rumored to run rampant around here? to be able to carry around a weapon like that in a public place, it had to be some kind of enforcement thing. she felt as if she should know about these things more, but didn't ask for fear of looking like a fool. she took his hand, gave a friendly handshake and smiled warmly in return. this person seemed kind. after seeing him laugh so merrily, she decided it would be okay not to worry.
"ah, my name! perla kinsella!" she said, perhaps a little too sprightly. she was excited to finally meet someone from this strange city, on this strange island. as he spoke of a story, her expression darkened. she had a bad feeling about it. surely, no harm can come of listening? her mind cooed. there was the possibility of it being some kind of old wives' tale - a happy little legend about trolls or fairies. although the idea of tiny men was very disconcerting, the girl figured she could handle something like that. "a story.." she said. curiosity was eating away at her. she shifted her gaze towards him and stared at him moonily, like a small child waiting for their grandfather to tell them a tale before bedtime. "i don't know about it. can you tell me?" she had the vague feeling that she would end up regretting this.

the way her face looked when kuro began to make remarks about the story made him wonder if she scared easily. if that was the case, he could certainly have a lot of fun with this... many people referred to his strange fascination of scaring people who were easily scared crude and insensitive, but it was something he took a lot of pleasure in. he couldn't explain it. she kind of looked at him as though he was an older parent telling his child(her) a story to put them to sleep. she also seemed very enraptured by the idea of a story. he grinned to himself and nodded.
he said in a quick, smooth voice, "ah, so you haven't heard it?! a shame. but maybe you shouldn't hear it... it could very well happen to you. you are sitting very close to the edge, after all..." his tone was foreboding and when he mentioned the edge, he looked over the side of the cliff, his eyes wide in terror. false terror, of course. nothing about the story scared him at all. in fact he was fascinated by it, and wished it had more twists and turns than it did. but judging by her face, kuro thought she may say no to the proposal of the story, so he decided to continue on with the story regardless of her answer. it was too much fun to pass up scaring her!
"see how the ocean looks slightly red in colour, down there? that's not the light playing tricks on your eyes. it's blood. the blood never drifts, it simply clots there from all the victims the cliff has taken. the story begins when this city was merely a town. kids used to jump off this and swim to shore, but some kids would die. many thought it was just the kids rough-housing too much, and diving too recklessly. but the cliff began to demand sacrifices, and it's said that the red will continue to pulse out and become even more festered unless children are thrown into its depths every so often." as he finished speaking, he put his scary and sinister tone away with a laugh, trying to release the tension. he didn't want to scare her too badly. he patted her on the back with a friendly glance. "of course, that's all just a rumour."

perla stared at kuro, eyes glittering with impatience and excitement. she found that on occasion, she was even shocked at her cowardliness. she often attributed her spineless character to an overactive imagination. it seemed that it actually hadn't changed much since her days of prancing through mud puddles and playing make-believe. when she thought of strange things, fear would creep up and catch her in a stranglehold. for instance, had she for one reason or another imagined that the trees in the forest had eyes, she would somehow be able to feel their prickly stares on the back of her head. then, the girl would end up quickening her step and glancing over her shoulder every couple of minutes. perhaps every couple of seconds, depending. and if she heard a single twig snap after that, she would race out into the sunlight like a bat out of hell. after she had unknowingly made a legendary demon-infested island her home, it seemed that her faint-heartedness had substantially increased.
the edge? what happened on the edge!? she thought, alarmed. perla scooted slowly away from the ragged cliff. she still listened intently. the redheaded girl could tell that this was going to be something related to ghosts. she was more scared of the supernatural and the unknown, rather than people themselves. this did not mean that she wouldn't scream if a person jumped out at her, however. as the blondie finished his story, she found herself glancing over the edge to look at the water for herself. now that she thought about it, it really did have a rather reddish hue. the color of blood. what if the sea was blood? a heaping mass of sticky crimson blood. her face contorted into an awkward grimace, as if she was trying but failing to hide her discomposure.
"pff," she scoffed shakily. she hadn't noticed it before, but didn't he seem to be enjoying this quite a bit? what with the fright in his eyes and the sinister story-telling tone. "as if anyone would believe that! there's no way that's true," perla said this as if she was confident. really, though, it was just her own efforts to calm herself. she felt her tensions lift when he said it was just a rumor and patted her back comfortingly. her shoulders, that had been stiffly fixed even in her sitting position, relaxed. "what a gruesome rumor, though.." she commented to herself, apprehension showing clearly on her face for a moment.

he could see it in her eyes when he mentioned the bow--she definitely noticed his accidentally scandalous comment. he decided not to make any further comment on it. he watched her face expectantly as the arrows hit their target, his eyes lighting up in pleasure as she was obviously surprised by his precision and skill. he knew all about it--he knew he was no amateur at this. but for some reason, pretending like you had little skill in something you were really very adept in appealed to girls. he didn't really have a thing for girls, never saw much of the appeal, but that's not to say he had nothing at all to say for girls. sometimes they were interesting to him. such as miss perla, here. but most of the time, all girls acted the same. they put on an act to be absolutely perfect and flawless and lie their way into a man's heart. of course, it hadn't ever happened to kuro, and he never planned for it to.
at her tone, kuro couldn't help but let out a light laugh. it was airy and free, and sounded much like he had absolutely no stress in his life. which was mostly true--being a hunter, the city of jukyo's government(if that was what you could call it) paid for his bills and every other expense he needed to live. he led a very simple life, other than having to fight demons all the time. but it was alright. he always found nice things when fighting demons. like the place he was in. it was one of his favourite things about the jobs. all the people he met and all the places he saw. they were worth it all. "yeah right, i bet you like to be teased, secretly!" he made a slight jest, then continued, slightly more serious but still with a goofy smile taped on his face. "but really, you think i'd let you be hit? you're crazy, girl."

the girl swiped away a bit of her hair, which hung obtrusively in her field of vision. she didn't want anything at all blocking her sight. she felt like if she looked away for just a moment, something strange would appear in the ocean or the story-telling man would disintegrate into ghostly nothingness. and that was something that she really didn't want, now that her nerves were frayed. perla fiddled with a few pieces of grass that poked up between her splayed out fingers. she gave him a half-hearted glare at his comment, about thinking that it 'wouldn't scare her too much'. her anger quickly dissipated, though. its not like it was his fault. it was her fault for being such a wuss; since most people over the age of seven wouldn't have found that tale scary at all.
"hm?" she mumbled, interested. she took his hand gratefully and stood up straight. what could be in this forest that was so great? she could think of a million things. a pond, a huge tree, a strange rock? perla found herself getting so excited over it that she thought no matter what it was, it would blow her mind. that is, unless it was something terrifying. there was no way that he was going to play some kind of trick on her, right? in school, she had always been the one that pranks were pulled on. she had to walk around corners widely so that no one would jump out, grab her, and make her scream bloody murder. it was quite troublesome for her, but it was always nice to feel relief wash over her when she realized that she was in no real danger.
she followed him quickly. their feet made came down heavy on the dead leaves and twigs that covered the forest floor. she noticed the hidden path, cut unevenly and not entirely visible. she would have never seen it unless he'd pointed it out. the girl followed slowly, ducking her head under branches and the taller limbs of bordering shrubs. when kuro quietly told her to close her eyes, it sent a shiver down her spine. is it really necessary? she wondered heatedly and pouted. "fine," she answered. she closed her blue eyes reluctantly and held her arms at her side. "you'd better not scare me, or i swear i'll punch you!" said the girl. she was nervous, but she decided to trust him. with her eyes closed and a blank expression on her face, she almost looked like she had just fallen asleep there, in the middle of the path.

the was she looked frustrated at him was reason enough for him to want to take her to his special place. it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen--and to share it with her must be able to make up for how careless he had been! when she closed her eyes, she almost looked like she had fallen asleep right where she stood. if it was possible to do that. so peaceful, and unaware. he had the urge to scare her, but he suppressed it. he stifled a chuckle, perishing the thought in his mind, and put his hand over her eyes in case she decided to peek.
he guided her forward slowly, making sure not to cause her to trip over any debris, and exited the bushes safely with her eyes still shielded. it was a lot sunnier out than he had remembered, he almost had to shield his own eyes. but as he looked at it, he felt very glad indeed that he had brought her here. every time he visited it, which was when he was either sad or angry, it seemed to grow even more beautiful to him. true, it wasn't particularly spectacular, to any old person's eye, but kuro was able to see the beauty in nature. everything involved with nature was beautiful to him--including every person, every animal, every living being. no matter what they looked like, they were still beautiful to him. as was perla. he lifted his hand from her eyes and said quietly, "alright. you can open your eyes now." he wore a silly grin on his face when he said this, trying to suppress his joy. but it was difficult--he was looking so forward to her reaction that he himself was experiencing such a reaction from it. but all he could do was looked at the features on her face, for any hint of interest or happiness.
what stood before them was an immense field that was splashed with colour--yellows, oranges, pinks, just to name some of kuro's favourites. it was like a moor but not as large, but much larger than a meadow. it always looked like sunset there, the way the tall blades of grass reflected colour. there was wheat growing in some areas, just grass in the others, but all the grass was pale yellow and glinted orange. there were small pink flowers that dotted the field, and some a bright blue as well. there were also a few yellow, but not so many colours as to make them clash. the very sky seemed to shine orange from the grass, or maybe it was a brighter shade of blue? no matter what it was, every time it took kuro's breath away. and he hoped it would do the same for her.

she carefully placed her steps, worried that she might blindly trip over a stump or rock and go flying into the ground. however, her feet didn't scuff against anything. it was a wonder, because before she closed her eyes she had glanced down the trail. it was littered with round stones sticking up and wayward fallen branches. it felt like she was being moved in an unhurried zig-zag pattern. is it on purpose? how nice! she thought. she was markedly moved by this mundane action and felt the slightest bit of guilt for threatening to hit him just a few minutes earlier. the girl resisted the urge to twist away and flick upon her blue eyes. even if his hand is there, maybe you could see between the cracks of his fingers.. it was very tempting. she hoped that they'd arrive soon.
when perla was told to open her eyes, excitement rose within her. what could it be? what was she about to see? the redhead opened her eyes and let out a gasp. she was immediately astounded. she wasn't met with the jeering face of a hooligan, but rather a beautiful meadow that looked like it was out of a painting. blue, pink, and yellow flowers stood out and swayed drowsily upon a backdrop of golden grass. a calm wind blew against the grasses and the grasses moved with it; causing a delightful sight of rippling gold. even the sky here seemed to be bigger and a brighter shade of blue. the girl wondered - was she even same dreary island as before? a place as fantastic as this existed on a supposedly cursed piece of land?! it was practically laughable.
she turned to kuro and grinned widely, not sure of what to say. the slight resentment she held towards him because of the story had disappeared the moment that she saw the lovely pasture. no, probably even before that. her grudges were always short lived, and now she even found herself looking at him with admiration. "it's so pretty!" perla exclaimed, pale eyes gliding over the field. she let out an inward laugh, happy to have been shown such a place. "how did you come across this? it looked pretty well hidden," the girl inquired.

his cobalt eyes flashed mischievously when her face lit up in delight. he had always assumed that his male mind knew nothing of the inner workings of a woman's heart, but it appeared that he was wrong. or maybe she was an easy code to crack. either way, he was pleased by how it had turned out. he was certain moments ago that she was going to beat him up for playing a mean trick on her, but now she seemed positively delighted. at her question, he shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. he tried to think up some badass scenario that would impress her. one that made it seem like he wasn't even trying. he nodded at her politely. "like i told you, i'm a hunter. and i'm always stationed around here. demons stay away from this place, it seems, so when i'm being chased and know i can't win, i always flee here." he looked at the sky, closing his eyes as a pleasant warm win blew, causing his blond locks to flow carelessly. he relished the feeling of it. it was one of his favourite things.
he supposed that he didn't really answer her question so well, but he decided to leave that be and show her something else of interest. he took her hand and brought her closer to the center of the meadow, where he usually practiced his archery. he supposed that since nothing else was going on, she might be interested in seeing it. he felt kind of silly--like he was trying to impress her or something, but he shrugged it off. there was nothing wrong with showing off the talents one possessed, especially if it was in the presence of a lovely lady such as herself. he let go of her hand and looked very seriously at her, but with a smile on his face, he said, "wanna see my.... bow?" he hadn't intended in the slightest for it to sound as suggestive as it did. i definitely should have worded that differently, now she is going to think i'm one of those weird guys... he didn't let his face show his distress. he was good at hiding anxiety. maybe, if he was lucky, she wouldn't notice. but really... who wouldn't notice something like that.
he didn't wait for her answer, and instead commenced what he would of done had she said yes. it was better than waiting for her reply, that was for certain. he kicked a battered up sack of hay and pulled out his bow, readying it with arrows, he aimed for directly above them--into the sky, toward the clouds. and he began to rapidly release arrows from the sling. they made a satisfying weep as they left the sling, a noise that kuro had become very friendly with. he strapped the bow back onto him and guided perla away from the sack a couple feet. he stood deliberately close as to scare her, looking at her face to see any signs of fear. he could hear the whirring of the arrows as they neared the earth, and he looked up, watching as each arrow perfectly hit the bullseye that was clumsily painted onto the sack. some of his arrows were broken due to the fact that they all hit in the exact same place, but he shrugged. he had plenty more at home. when the barrage of arrows had finished their descent, he picked the ones that could be salvaged up delicately and back into his quiver. then he looked to her with expecting cerulean eyes.

perla took in a deep breath of air. the air here seemed to be lighter and more crisp; it wasn't heavy with the seaspray that floated up from the sloshing grey sea. now that she thought back to it, she had felt a bit like she'd been suffocating. her mouth had felt unbearably dry and she had even felt a bit faint. the girl's brainless expression turned to one of discomposed relief. had she suddenly became lightheaded, she'd probably be nothing more than a lifeless corpse, swaying with the current just below the surface of the water. she shrugged her shoulders uncomfortably, dismissing her gloomy thoughts. she grinned kindly at kuro's reply. in all honesty, she had just asked to avoid silence between them. "hm, i wonder why that is?" she said in a sing-song voice, turning her gaze towards the blue sky. maybe this was some kind of safe place; the sole holy spot on a supposed cursed island. it was a romantic thought, really, and the girl decided it would be great if it was true.
perla's face turned a bright shade of red. her mouth was fixed in a practically cartoon-like scowl. as she glanced downwards, her appearance could have easily been called comical. "u-um. i'm not, i don't- alright?" she stammered. bow? the way the blonde said it made it seem.. dirty. it was only a matter of moments when he whipped out his bow. an actual bow. she looked away and glowered. of course that was the case. was she really that much of a perverted girl? like anyone else her age, her thoughts sometimes went astray. still, she couldn't believe her own reaction to a perfectly innocent question.
the girl felt a familiar sense of apprehension when the arrows were flung up into the sky. was this necessary? what if one happened to go the wrong way? what if a freak wind blew it towards them or something?! they were still relatively close to the target, and she could tell that kuro had done it on purpose. any normal person would have gone as far away as possible, right? she could now see a single arrow falling from the blue of the sky. without thinking, she stuck close to him. in her mind, this could very well be her last day on earth. hopefully this guy she just met wouldn't have to go home with her bright blood spattered on his clothes.
her fear ceased with the sound of each arrow hitting the target. every single one of them hit the target exactly. it was amazing. she didn't know much about archery at all. she had tried it once, long ago, but could barely pull back the bowstring. it was a great skill. she quickly came back to her senses and backed away from him, fidgeting awkwardly. "that was amazing," she admitted hesitantly. "but really! stop teasing me, i really thought i'd be hit."
ooc: so basically i couldn't think of a thing to say. i have regrettably failed. the next post will be super tasty to make up for this, promise.
