it was a lukewarm spring night. the sort of night that compels people to arise from their beds and creatures to creep from their hiding places. they would get up with their minds suddenly filled to the brim with want for adventure, and they would go for it thoughtlessly; or, that was it in the case of this young man. after staying confined indoors for the long winter months, he had grown weary of his daily routine. he spent hours on his back, staring at the ceiling thinking of nothing in particular. every so often he'd look out the window or change his position. only today had he decided to get up from his bed and stretch his desolate limbs.
izo's body cast long shadows against the cracked cement in the alley that he shuffled down. he had a rather awkward gait, like he was standing on his own two feet for the first time. these legs! he thought, his frustration coming to a boil. it was like he had to learn how to walk all over again. and it was really quite embarrassing, looking like a toddler hobbling towards its parents. this was why he took the back way. he didn't want to be stared at. the dark boy hated the stares the most. humans were so quick to judge, even if they don't know the circumstances. surely, if they knew, they would understand. if they knew he was an a century-old creature who had simply been in an odd state of hibernation for three straight months, they'd definitely understand why he's having trouble walking right now.
movement was becoming easier. izo decided that he could probably venture out into one of the main streets of the city, rather than just wandering around in an alleyway. or, perhaps, he could peek into one of these so called hole-in-the-walls that were known to be popping up around the shadier parts. no one would ask questions. he shoved his hands in his pockets and started off in the direction of a bar that was nearby and that he knew well.
TIME LAPSE
the dark-eyed youth bit his lip as he saw his favorite neon sign. he reached out and opened the heavy wooden door of the tavern languidly. the place seemed mostly empty. it was quiet besides the sound of glasses tapping against the bar and muffled conversations. he felt a bit relieved that it wasn't busy. he didn't like being trapped in crowds. the voices irritated him. he stalked his way to a stool and took a seat, staring around blankly. perhaps he wasn't the only creature out tonight.

although he hadn't been around this part of town in ages, he felt he had sauntered in here with some fragments of recognition in bystanders' eyes. he was an ebisawa, after all. all they were known for was for hunting demons. from the moment he was born, that was the only thing he was destined to do. but he had accepted his inevitable fate gratefully. in fact he had embraced his due calling with such graciousness, that it was apparent he would have likely chosen that path even without being an ebisawa. but being an ebisawa just made him recognizable. feared among youkai, but idolized among humans for being a hero. it was sometimes a burden, but he knew it was worth something. eventually, it would be worth something...
with that being said, he strode in with confidence, a giddy smile on his face full of cockiness and careless abandon, he made his way to a barstool, lifting a leg over it gingerly to sit casually upon it. it wasn't until he sat that he noticed a very dark, wiry-looking fellow sitting a couple seats down from him. he didn't judge based on looks--sure, the guy looked shady, but kuro had met several people who looked shady but were in truth quite capable friends. kuro wasn't much for awkward silences(seeing as how the pub was so empty, and they were the only ones sitting at the counter), so he scooted a couple seats over nonchalantly until he was sitting right next to the young man.
kuro didn't drink much; he didn't really trust those around him. but to put up a front that seemed carefree, he ordered sake. he made sure it wasn't too large. while he was waiting, he turned toward the dark-haired boy next to him. with that look upon his face, kuro began to wonder if something was bothering him. so he cleared his throat to himself before speaking. "so, what are you doing out tonight?" he began casually, not looking in the man's direction. he addressed him like an old friend. like someone he had sat next to in a pub every friday night. it was at that moment that it occured to kuro that he didn't introduce himself. how rude of me, he thought, clearing his throat once more. "pardon my manners. my name is kuro. kuro ebisawa." he pondered to himself whether it was wise to mention his last name or not. be him youkai or human, it was sure to illicit some sort of response.

izo stared at his hands as the bartender sluggishly made his way over to take his order. he politely ordered a whiskey. he wasn't a huge drinker, but tonight he felt the need. he felt a bit tense and he wanted to loosen up a bit; so maybe he could have a good encounter tonight. it didn't look promising, as most of the people in here were already occupied or were the type that he'd never associate with. that is, boring old men who drank silently. he took a swig of his beverage and felt it burn pleasantly as it trickled down his throat. couldn't some curvaceous young lady come through the door? after such a long time in seclusion, he longed for someone to come along and revive his youthful wiles. anyone would do.
the young man thought about quickly finishing his drink and going to some other place to look for action. but somehow, the atmosphere of the bar was calming. normally, it was filled with thugs and jaunty piano tunes, but not tonight. the dim lights made him feel at ease. he sat silently for awhile, contemplating. he heard the door open and someone walk in. confident footsteps were approaching the bar. he turned his dark eyes sharply towards the owner of the footsteps; a blonde man, around his age. izo didn't give him much thought and continued on staring directly in front of himself, taking sporadic sips from his drink. then, the blondie moved to the seat next to him.
it seemed that this guy was uncomfortable in the silence. the dark man thought he'd just ignore his question, asked as if they were friends. he couldn't help but make a sour expression. izo listened blandly to his introduction; until he uttered his last name. ebisawa. he knew that he recognized that cocky attitude from somewhere! clearly, he had to be from a family of hunters. izo quickly turned to face him and his eyes were icy for a fleeting moment, before flashing a faux-friendly smile. "i'm just killing time," he admitted, letting out a chuckle. he held out his cold hand for a handshake. "i'm izo brown. but what about you? why is the son of that famous family in such a place?" he questioned. all of the members of the family had very similar features - light eyes, light hair. he'd met with some before.
