The girl hummed to herself as she strolled aimlessly through the woods. A soft breeze picked her hair up and stirred it around as the sun caused it to glimmer, giving the appearance of some sort of golden halo. Her ears were perked up atop her head, twitching at any and every noise. She felt safe enough in the shelter of the dense trees to leave the hood of her cloak down.
Happily getting lost, that was the story of her life.
Elizabeth breathed in deeply the smell of the woods. Pine and cedar, leaves and flowers, life and new beginnings. She’d always loved the forest, for many reasons. For one, it was her natural home. As a kitsune, she had an instinctual love for nature. Besides that, she loved all the greenery. She loved all the life, the pure, raw sense of aliveness she got whenever she was in a forest. She loved all the little animals that skittered around the trees.
She continued on like this for a long time, walking slowly through the woods. She didn’t know how long; she didn’t care. She was perfectly at home here. Eventually, she began to sense a space up ahead where fewer critters lived. Assuming it was a clearing, she continued on her way. It wasn’t long until she stumbled upon the area she’d sensed.
It wasn’t a clearing. It was a town. Or rather, what was left of it. An entire village, now nothing but ruins. She took in her surroundings in wonders. It was quiet here; secluded. A grin broke over her face as she realized the discovery she’d made. A silent retreat, a place to hide. Who would dare look for her here? This was a place for her, a place where she could be safe. This place was hers now.
Just as this thought crossed her mind, her left ear snapped back to point behind her, listening warily. Something had made a rustle in the bush, barely above a whisper. Something no mere human would have heard. Slowly, she turned to face the source of the sound…

Miyako wandered about the woods, pondering how she got there in the first place. It seemed that she often ended up in different places without quite realizing the reason or means for getting there. She did admit that her sense of direction wasn't the best, but she didn't believe that it was that bad. Not bad enough to get herself lost in the woods with no rhyme or reason. For now, she walked about in her human form. Normally she'd prefer her faster and more glorious kitsune form, but she didn't want to risk encountering a human in that form. The chances of that were slim, and she knew that—but once bitten, twice shy, as they would say. After being discovered by those two humans in the forest, she was deeply afraid of that happening again. What if a hunter saw her? That would be her worst nightmare.
Her thoughts had distracted her. She didn't see the branch in front of her until it had already smacked her in the face, much to her chagrin. Muttering angrily to herself, she shoved the branch out of her way, half-tempted to let loose some kitsune fire and burn the whole forest down. She then continued to pick her way through the wild brush, beginning to detest every single plant in her way. And finally, a break in the trees, a clearing.
Oh, wait. This was more than a mere clearing.
Curious silver eyes roamed the ruins, taking in the sight. In all her years, Miyako had never seen the ruins of a lost city before, and the sight fascinated her. It also appealed to a side of her most never saw, the curious part of her nature. She stepped into the clearing, the home of the ruins, intent on investigating every piece of rubble.
Then she saw the girl already there.
She hadn't even noticed that the girl was there, the ruins had intruiged her so. But she did notice the girl's fox ears right away. Another kitsune? The thought brought a smile to Miyako's lips. The kitsune girl appeared to be a young one, unable to conceal her ears or tail yet. Just a little kit. How precious.
Like all other kitsunes, Miyako had fox ears and tails despite being in human form. She was able to hide them from all eyes with her illusions, though, unlike this young kit in front of her. But now she let them show, proudly displaying her kitsune status to the younger kitsune. Her whitish ears twitched happily, and her two tails glinted gold in the sunlight as they swished from side to side as if waving hello. "Hello there," she said simply, an almost playful smile curving her lips.

Red ears flattened against brown hair. Elizabeth bared her teeth and narrowed her eyes at the stranger, who had not yet seemed to notice her. The black-haired stranger seemed occupied with taking in their surroundings.
Elizabeth studied the woman closely. The stranger was a young woman with long black hair and light skin. She appeared to be nothing more than a mere human. Her eyes glinted silver and were currently full of fascination and wonder. Clearly, she'd never seen the ruins before, either.
Lizzy's tail twitched irritably as she waited tensely for the intruder to see her. Finally, the strange woman turned her eyes toward her, eyes that immediately darted to the girl’s ears and tail. Donning a small smile, the stranger’s appearance shifted slightly and suddenly, Elizabeth could see near-white ears and not one, but two golden tails.
Red ears immediately perked up with interest and curiosity. The girl’s eyes widened and she tipped her head to one side, waiting for the other kitsune to speak. She didn’t have to wait long.
“Hello, there.” The smile on the black-haired woman’s face seemed playful, almost mischievous. Elizabeth stood stock still for a moment longer before moving to stand directly in front of the stranger. Still with her head cocked to the side in curiosity, her eyes bright with interest, and her ears perked up, she answered.
“Hiya!” She smiled brightly at the other kitsune as she clasped her hands behind her back. Her tail continued to sweep back and forth behind her, under her cloak. “My name’s Lizzy.” She blinked her eyes at the stranger. “Who are you?”

Miyako's smile grew in response to the young kit's cheeriness. Normally, she wouldn't react so kindly to someone so cheerful—that kind of attitude from a human usually never failed to irritate her, in fact—but this was different. This cheerfulness was coming from another kitsune like her.
"My name is Miyako," she said, an uncharacteristically warm tone lacing her voice. "It's a pleasure to meet you." Her ears both twitched once in greeting, her tails still waving their hello. How often was it that two kitsunes met in such circumstances? This was a rare occurence for Miyako—she wanted to make the best of it.
Well, first thing was to try and make conversation. Silver eyes glanced around again at the remains of a fallen city. "These ruins...It makes you wonder what happened here, doesn't it?"
Miyako moved a little closer to the kitsune who called herself Lizzy as inspiration struck. "Or if you'd prefer...we could talk about something else." After pausing a moment, a single ear twitching in the brief silence, she continued, "We could talk about how I could take you under my wing, as they say, how I could teach you to master the ways of the kitsune. I could help you become a great kitsune. I can teach you to hide your ears and tail, how to create illusions that are nearly infallible." Perhaps she was doing this so she could teach the impressionable young kit to be a prankster like herself, but she wasn't. At that moment, all Miyako wanted was to have the youngster in her care, almost like the daughter she's never had.
